Shifting to remote world language classes – can you still focus on core practices?

Recent reports show that 52% of school districts around the country have remote learning exclusively, another 19% are using a blended learning model this fall.

How-to make online teaching solutions most effective is critical given this landscape. Learning from some “crash and burn” teaching experiences this past spring, using a hodgepodge of apps or technology platforms retrofitted from business applications, school administrators, instructional technology specialists, and teaching staff are now seeking out solutions that align with subject-specific teaching practices and learning goals.

Happy 2018! As we start the New Year, many schools and districts are seeking out productivity tools for new or developing 1:1 initiatives. In tandem, world language educators are tasked with finding ways to increase target language communication to build real-world language skills. Mobile instructional technology platforms can help by providing more interactive learning (increased speaking) with teacher guidance and feedback.

With that said, we are seeing offerings of apps, language lab platforms, and other technologies that promise to be “free.” But the question is: Are they really free?

This week, the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ICTFL) is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The celebration will be part of its Fall Conference being held in Tinley Park, IL. The conference brings together hundreds of foreign language educators across Illinois to learn and share best teaching practices. The 2017 conference theme is “Explore the Core, the World Language Core: Motivate, Measure, Maximize.”

Post AP World Languages Exams 2017 – How Did We Do?

AP® Exams 2017 are now in the history books. This year The College Board introduced new requirements for digital recording and on-line submission of student responses for the speaking portion of AP World Languages exams. These new rules have had many schools scrambling to figure out the best way to administer the tests.

For those schools using SANS’ Virtuoso™ and SANSSpace™ LIVE technology platforms, concerns about the changes were minimal. Why? Because we have been providing controlled AP digital recording solutions to school language departments for AP exams and other oral testing for more than 10 years, and our technology is fully compliant with The College Board procedures.

Our most favorite teachers tend to be “language teachers” – world languages, ASL, and ESL – makes sense since SANS’ technology is about helping language teachers engage students so they can focus on communication and real world language learning.

State-of-the-Art Media Center & Language Lab Create New Learning Opportunities at Bernards High School, NJ

Students at Bernards High School, in the New Jersey’s Somerset Hills School District, are ready and excited to learn in a state-of-the-art media center funded with a community-supported referendum. The center has been designed to accommodate all students, with collaborative and quiet study areas, and a new language lab.

The community was invited to a ribbon cutting and open house to celebrate the opening of the media center. Guests became “world language students” as Jay Carney, of Chester Technical Services, Inc., provided an overview of how the SANS Virtuoso™ language lab technology facilitates interactive language learning, even partnering them for conversation practice.

Dr. Osa-Melero is an Assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA and a SANS Inc. /Mead Leadership Fellow selected by the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Niños y Niñas Bilingües y Biculturales is a program in which my Spanish Conversation and Composition college students deliver lessons on basic vocabulary, geography, and cultural features of Spanish-speaking countries to English-speaking preschool children ages 3 to 5 in the YMCA-Duquesne Child Development Center.

We bring this content to the preschoolers from a comparative and contrastive perspective. We are helping the little ones to compare their culture with the culture of various Spanish-speaking countries with the hope that they find differences, but also many similarities. The underlying goal of this program is to show children that we are not as different to other cultures as we think we are.
