SANS Inc. is celebrating its 15th Anniversary. Looking back and looking forward.

When we started.

The year is 2003. Apple’s iTunes Music Store is named TIME’s Coolest Invention of the year; cell phones with built-in digital cameras are quickly gaining momentum with 6 million sold in the U.S. alone. In June of 2003, a new company, SANS Inc. Software and Network Solutions is created to provide new language lab software solutions to schools, universities, and government agencies.

Where we are today.

The year is 2018.  More than 35 million people pay for music subscriptions in the U.S., and approximately 237 million people in the U.S. are smartphone users.  At SANS Inc., we are celebrating our 15th anniversary, and world language programs in schools across the U.S. are seeing the benefits of SANSSpace LIVE, our browser-based instructional technology for language teaching anytime, anywhere.

As we fast-forward from 2003 to 2018 it’s obvious that technology is now ubiquitous in our everyday lives – at work, at home, and in the education of our children.  Chromebooks currently represent about 60 percent of mobile device shipments into U.S. K-12 schools today.  SANS’ technology has also evolved. Our interactive instructional technology is a viable solution for teaching languages in mobile environments – schools with 1:1 initiatives including Chromebooks.

Amidst all of these technological changes, we still believe that language teachers play a critical role in the development of language learners.  The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) position statement on technology for language learning has a similar philosophy: “Language instruction is best guided by language educators rather than solely delivered via a computer program or by a non-content specialist.”  To this point, we feel strongly that our technology is a vehicle for language teachers to manage & monitor class activity, interact in real-time with their class or with individual students, increase target language usage in class and at home, and guide students to build comfort in their language skills & ultimately increase proficiency.

Looking forward…and thank you for your support!

It’s evident that technology will continue to change.  As we at SANS Inc., enter into our 16th year, we will continue to move our technology forward.  As we celebrate our accomplishments and look ahead to the future, we would like to thank all of the language educators that are our customers.  Your hard work and dedication to language teaching are inspiring.  Your feedback and suggestions over the years have helped us create better technology solutions to engage students in active language learning, leading to practical communication skills that they can use as they enter a truly global world.

Cheers!
